Your eyes lie to you on purpose
Perception is not a recording. It is a running guess about what is out there, and illusions are what a very good guess looks like when you catch it out.

There is a persistent idea that seeing is passive: light arrives, the eye records it, the brain plays it back. Nothing about vision works like that, and every illusion on this site is a consequence.
The signal is terrible
Consider what actually reaches you. Two small patches of light-sensitive tissue, each with a hole in it where the optic nerve leaves. Both are moving constantly — three or four jerks a second, called saccades, during which you are effectively blind. The image is upside down, low-resolution everywhere except a patch the size of a thumbnail at arm’s length, and it arrives with a delay.
From that, you get a stable, wide, sharp, full-colour world with no gaps and no lag.
That is not playback. That is reconstruction.
The brain is guessing, and it is good at it
The working model in vision science is that the brain runs a continuous prediction of what should be out there, and uses the incoming signal mainly to correct the prediction where it is wrong.
This is enormously efficient. It also means the prediction is doing a great deal of the work, and that what you experience is closer to the model than to the sensor.
Most of the time you never notice, because the model is right.
An illusion is a correct answer to the wrong question
Take the Müller-Lyer figure. Two lines with fins at each end, one set pointing out, one in. The lines are the same length and they look different.
The usual explanation is that outward fins resemble a near corner — the edge of a building coming toward you — and inward fins a far one, like the inside corner of a room. If two objects cast the same size on the retina but one is further away, the far one must actually be bigger. Your brain applies that correction, faithfully and automatically.
The correction is right. The premise is wrong: there is no depth, it is a flat drawing. But you cannot switch the correction off, because it is not a decision.
The measurement is not wrong. Nothing measured it. The number you experience is the output of a system that assumes it is looking at a world, and here it is looking at a picture.
Why knowing does not help
This is the part that unsettles people. You can measure the lines, prove they are identical, come back a minute later, and they still look different.
Perception is what psychologists call cognitively impenetrable — the visual system does not take instruction from what you know. Your belief updates. The experience does not.
Keep that in mind for the rest of this site. It is the reason “just be more careful” is such poor advice against a good deception. Careful is a conscious operation, and most of what fools you happens well below that.
What follows
The next three pieces take one part of the machinery each: how colour is constructed rather than measured, what happens in the hole in your retina, and why looking at something is no guarantee of seeing it.
None of them involve a deceiver. That comes later.
