Colour is not a property of the world

The same grey looks light or dark depending on what is around it. That is not a defect — it is the mechanism that lets you recognise a white shirt at midnight.

Put two identical grey squares on a white background and a black one. They will not look the same. The illusion on this page joins them with a bar of the same grey, which is the only argument that ever convinces anyone.

The interesting question is not why you get it wrong. It is why the system is built this way.

Lightness is a ratio, not a reading

The light bouncing off a sheet of white paper indoors is dimmer — often far dimmer — than the light bouncing off a lump of coal in direct sun. If your visual system reported absolute intensity, the coal would look white and the paper black.

It does not, because it does not report absolute intensity. It reports how much light a surface returns relative to its surroundings. That ratio stays roughly constant as the illumination changes, so the paper stays white from dawn to candlelight.

The formal name is lightness constancy, and it is one of the most useful things your brain does.

The cost

A system tuned to ratios can be fed a misleading ratio. Surround a grey with white and it is returning less than its surroundings, so it reads as dark. Surround the identical grey with black and the same patch now returns more than its surroundings, so it reads as light.

You cannot see the absolute value, because you were never shown it. What you were shown is a comparison.

Colour does the same thing, in three channels

The same logic runs for hue. A white wall under a tungsten bulb reflects strongly orange light; under an overcast sky, strongly blue. You see white both times.

Your visual system estimates the colour of the illumination and discounts it. That estimate uses the whole scene, which is why the estimate can be pushed around.

This is what made a certain photograph of a striped dress into a global argument in 2015. The image was ambiguous about its lighting — it could be read as a pale garment in shadow or a dark one in bright light. Viewers unconsciously picked one, subtracted it, and arrived at incompatible colours with total confidence. Both groups were doing the correct operation on an underdetermined input.

Why this matters beyond illusions

Every time you judge an image, you are judging a reconstruction, and the reconstruction depends on context you did not choose.

Change the surround and you change the perception without touching the pixel. Designers know this. So does anyone building a screenshot meant to mislead: the same crop, on a different background, in a different app’s chrome, is read differently before you have processed a word of it.

Nothing was retouched. The number in the file is unchanged. The context did all the work.

The practical version

When a colour or a brightness matters — a bruise in a photograph, a shade in a product listing, a redaction that looks black — isolate it. Crop out the surround, or place a known reference beside it.

You are not correcting your eyes. You are removing the input that is pushing them.
